Carpenter ants have all black, 3-segment bodies with occasionally a red middle. Each colony may contain up to 5,000 ants or more and is likely made up of a queen (2cm), winged reproductive ants (1.5cm), and worker ants (1 to 1.5cm). Although carpenter ants chew through wood, leaving sawdust like particles, they do not actually eat wood.

When to Watch Out for Carpenter Ants
